KUALA LUMPUR: The “Arts On The Move”(AOTM) initiative has returned with a bang after several years, featuring a unique range of quality public arts and cultural activities for commuters to enjoy at an LRT station here.
The programme is designed to revitalise cultural arts in the city centre and will showcase 12 live performances, three workshops and two art installations every fortnight from February to June 2023 between 5pm and 6pm at the Pasar Seni LRT station hall.
A unique art installation featuring vibrant yellow coloured acrylic stands resembling trees along the stairs leading from the station's LRT to the MRT area, titled “Sunnyside Up”, will also be on display for the next three months.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that the cultural initiative would improve the quality of life of commuters while bringing cultural life to public transport.
He said the art showcase aims to brighten up the busy transit stations while also providing commuters a more engaging experience during their daily routine.
"This will improve the mental health of commuters while also promoting the diverse history, heritage, culture and food that downtown Kuala Lumpur has to offer.
"This is also inline with the ministry's goal of enhancing and enriching our public transport environment as well as the daily journeys of commuters," he said in his speech during the AOTM launch on Tuesday (Feb 14).
Also present at the launch was his deputy Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim, Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) chief executive officer Dr Yatela Zainal Abidin, Think City managing director Hamdan Abdul Majeed.
The cultural art initiative is the brainchild of a collaboration between Think City, a community-focused urban sustainability and rejuvenation organisation, MRT Corporation and Kuala Lumpur City Hall while also supported by YSD and the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.
AOTM had previously been set up in 2016 at Masjid Jamek LRT station and featured similar cultural and art programmes, which ran for two years.
